Our History
Brown & Toland takes its name from two San Francisco health care pioneers, Charlotte Amanda Brown, M.D., and Hugh Huger Toland, M.D.

Dr. Charlotte Amanda Blake Brown
In the nineteenth century Dr. Brown founded, along with eight other prominent female physicians, the first hospital run by women for women -- Children's Hospital in San Francisco, which later became California Pacific Medical Center. She also opened one of the nation's first well-baby clinics and pioneered teaching methods for instructing new mothers to care for their babies.

Dr. Hugh Huger Toland
Dr. Toland came to California during the Gold Rush and quickly became one of the city's leading physicians. He established the Toland Medical College in 1864.

Brown & Toland was founded in 1997.

Now one of the nation's leading medical groups, Brown & Toland has earned numerous awards for quality, and is one of the first medical groups in the nation to deploy integrated electronic health records in a private practice setting.
