Prevent the flu: get vaccinated

Who Needs a Flu Vaccination?

The CDC now recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older should get an annual flu vaccine. While influenza is common and does not always cause serious health problems, it can lead to hospitalization or death if not treated promptly.

It's especially important that people who are at risk of influenza complications and those around them get vaccinated, including young children, their caregivers and healthcare personnel.

Please see the Flu FAQ for detailed information on the flu and vaccination.

Where to Get Flu Vaccinations

The best place to get vaccinated is your doctor's office. If you are unable to obtain a flu vaccination from your doctor, we encourage you to go to one of the many flu clinics and retail locations offering flu shots.

About the Flu Vaccine

The 2011-2012 flu vaccine protects against three different flu viruses: an H3N2 virus, an influenza B virus and the H1N1 virus. Flu shots are the most common form, but a mist is also available for healthy people age 2 to 49. The flu vaccine usually costs between $25 and $30.

High-dose flu vaccines are aimed at seniors but it is unknown if these vaccines are more effective at preventing influenza than regular flu shots, which cost less.

Flu Vaccine Reimbursement for HMO Members

Brown & Toland will reimburse HMO members for flu vaccinations received outside of their doctor's office.

HMO members can be reimbursed up to $30 for a regular vaccine and up to $55 for a high-dose vaccine.

For reimbursement, please print and fill out the Vaccination Reimbursement Form and send it in with a copy of your vaccination receipt.

If you are a PPO member, please contact your health plan for information regarding reimbursement.
