OAKLAND, CA – Brown & Toland Physicians has selected Epic, the most widely-used and comprehensive health records (CHR) system, to integrate its physicians and their staff into one interoperable clinical and revenue cycle platform.

Epic is used by a majority of U.S. News and World Report’s top-ranked hospitals and medical schools as well as major physician groups across the country who are working collaboratively every day to improve patient care, innovate healthcare delivery and achieve financial health. Nearly 60 percent of California residents already have a record at an organization that uses or is currently installing Epic.

All organizations using Epic can exchange records with other inpatient and outpatient healthcare entities that use an interoperable system. That means Brown & Toland providers will be able to easily exchange patient data for greatly improved patient care. They can coordinate care with clinicians inside and outside of the Brown & Toland network who serve their patients and their families, closing care gaps and reducing duplication.

“Epic’s robust interoperable data exchange will allow us to share data securely between Epic and other non-Epic systems to improve patient care quality and workflow efficiencies,” said Soma Bulusu, CIO of Brown & Toland.  “We are excited to support our care providers with technologies to deliver world-class patient care.”

Epic is the only CHR system that provides a single platform for providing patient care and health insurance administration. This unified platform will allow Brown & Toland, which is responsible for managing all insurance functions for its members in the Bay Area, to provide tighter collaboration between providers and insurers. This integration enhances the patient experience by providing more transparency between managing health and wellness and the cost of care.

“We are excited to offer state-of-the-art tools to our physicians who practice throughout the Bay Area” said Kelly Robison, CEO of Brown & Toland. “Epic’s physician-centric EHR is user friendly to allow a more coordinated care experience for patients.”

Patients will benefit from the use of MyChart, a portal that allows patients and their designated caregivers to access their health information, communicate with providers, schedule appointments, and pay bills online.

“MyChart will enable patients to be active members of their care team with access to the information they need to manage their health,” said Fabiola Cobarrubias, M.D., M.B.A., Chair, Brown & Toland Board of Directors. “Epic will help our physicians compile a more complete and concise picture of a patient’s history, enabling better care.”
