San Francisco, Calif., Feb. 18, 2011 – Excitement is building as Oakland Athletics pitchers and catchers report for spring training this week in Arizona.

Nobody’s looking forward to the start of the baseball season more than Brown & Toland physician Jon Dickinson, M.D., who flew to Phoenix on Thursday to begin his first season as team orthopedist with the A’s.

Previously, the San Francisco-based orthopedic surgeon served as a physician for the Golden State Warriors basketball team. He is also a consultant for the San Francisco Ballet. The Oakland A’s chose Dr. Dickinson to join the roster of team doctors in November.

“I’m really looking forward to working with the players and the medical staff,” Dr. Dickinson said. “Baseball is a passion of mine, so to be able to combine my love of the game with medicine is really exciting.”

Dr. Dickinson played right field for the University of California, San Diego baseball team and was named athlete of the year in 1979 for his .380 batting average. He went on to earn his medical degree from the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, then completed his internship in orthopedics at the University of California, San Francisco. He is now an associate clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at UCSF.

Dr. Dickinson is part of Brown & Toland Physicians, a medical group comprised of 800 independent physicians across the Bay Area. He has been in private practice for more than two decades and currently sees patients at California Pacific Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine in San Francisco.

Brown & Toland Physicians, based in San Francisco, is an independent practice association (IPA) of more than 800 physicians serving more than 330,000 HMO and PPO members. Brown & Toland has earned numerous awards for clinical quality and patient satisfaction, and in 2010 was named for the fourth consecutive year an “Elite” Medical Group by the California Association of Physician Groups (CAPG).
